Year 1/2

Year 1/2

Year 1 is the beginning of children’s learning journey in Key Stage 1, making the move from Reception. Children’s learning builds upon the strong foundations made in the Early Years Foundation Stage, gradually transitioning into a more formal structure of learning. Year 2 is an exciting and important which year marks a time of growth in independence and responsibility for the children coming to the end of Key Stage 1. Children are supported to take ownership of their learning and are encouraged to discover their creativity across the curriculum, ready for the challenges awaiting them in Key Stage 2

Phonics and Reading

Children will access phonics on a daily basis and be grouped according to their stage not their age, so classes will be mixed and taught by different teachers/teaching assistants. The children will receive a school book that will be familiar to them, as well as a home school phonics book, however both books include the phonic sounds they have learnt during the week. Children are asked to read these books as much as possible to become confident, fluent readers. These books will be given to children on a 4-day cycle.

Once children have completed the phonics programme, the children will move on to our Accelerated Reading Programme (year 2). Children will complete an assessment based on comprehension and fluency which will report the child’s reading level. Children then select a book from this level and on completing the book, take a quiz before it is changed.
Alongside these books, children will also be able to choose a book to enjoy from our reading resources. These books will be chosen and changed every Thursday.

All children should bring their reading books and diary into class each day. Reading folders need to be placed in the reading tray, so that we can check them and change them if required. If children have read at home, could parents/carers please indicate this with a signature/comment. Children should aim to read to an adult every night for approx. 10 minutes to continue to make progress.

Spellings

Children’s spellings are put in their reading records every Monday. Children have a spelling session based on the given words every morning. On a Friday morning, children have a spelling test. The results are recorder in the child’s reading record and any words that were misspelt are highlighted.

Homework

Homework will be given out every Friday. This includes: reading, phonics/spelling practice, and an English and maths task. We also recommend children use Timetables Rockstars as often as possible. All homework is to be handed in no later than the following Wednesday.

P.E.

This term, Year 1/2 have coaches delivering PE sessions on a Monday and Wednesday.  All children have been asked to come to school wearing their PE kits on their appointed day.  Kits should comply with the school uniform policy.
